Twelfth East-West Spiritual Exchange

Details The Twelfth East-West Spiritual Exchange was held from September 17 to October 2, 2011. For the Twelfth Exchange two monks from Europe, two nuns from Europe, and one nun from the United States experienced Zen monastic life at Sōgen-ji in Okayama, Manju-ji in Ōita, Ten’e-ji in Gifu, and Eihei-ji in Fukui. The monastic stays were followed by a symposium at which the participants spoke of their experiences and impressions. After the end of the program on October 5 most of the participants remained in Japan for visits to Japanese Catholic monasteries that are participating in interreligious dialogue.
Schedule for the Twelfth East-West Spiritual Exchange, 2011
Sept. 17: Participants from Europe and the U.S. (two monks, three nuns) arrive in Japan, go to Sōgen-ji monastery in the city of Okayama.
Sept. 18: Zen monastic orientation at Sōgen-ji for participants.
Sept. 19: Zen monastic orientation at Sōgen-ji for participants.
Sept. 20: Zen monastic orientation at Sōgen-ji for participants.
Sept. 21: Nuns to Myōshin-ji, Kyoto; monks remain at Sōgen-ji.
Sept. 22: Monks to Manju-ji monastery in the city of Ōita; nuns to Ten’e-ji monastery in Gifu Prefecture.
Sept. 23: Monks and nuns participate in the activities of their respective monasteries.
Sept. 24: Monks and nuns participate in the activities of their respective monasteries.
Sept. 25: Monks and nuns participate in the activities of their respective monasteries.
Sept. 26: Monks and nuns participate in the activities of their respective monasteries.
Sept. 27: Monks and nuns participate in the activities of their respective monasteries.
Sept. 28: Participants return to Kyoto; rest day.
Sept. 29: Visits to attractions in Kyoto.
Sept. 30: Participants go to Eihei-ji in Fukui Prefecture.
Oct. 1:
Monks and nuns participate in the program at Eihei-ji.
Oct. 2: Participants return to Kyoto; rest day.
Oct. 3: Preparation for symposium.
Oct. 4: Reports by the participants; farewell party.
Oct. 5: Conclusion of Exchange program.
