Details | Chōshōdō 079 Painting: Toad Inscription: “If a person could become a Buddha just by sitting…” The Rinzai master Sengai Gibon was born in Taniguchi in Mino (present-day Gifu Prefecture). He became a monk under the priest Kūin at Seitai-ji in Gifu Prefecture and trained under Gessen Zen’e (1702–1781) at Tōki-an in Musashino (present Tokyo Prefecture) and also Bankoku Shōteki at Shōfuku-ji in Fukuoka. He later assumed the abbacy of Shōfuku-ji and became known for his skill both as a teacher and as an artist. His posthumous title is Zen Master Fumon Entsū. |
